Russian security forces blockaded a group of armed men in a house in the republic of Dagestan on Friday, a local law enforcement source said.
"The gunmen are blockaded in a private house in the village of Oktyabrskoye - their number of them is being determined," he said. "There have been a number of skirmishes with them, and the special operation is continuing," he added.
Dagestan, in the North Caucasus, is the scene of frequent clashes between Islamist fighters and the security forces. Republics across the North Caucasus have been the subject of attacks by insurgents since the war in Chechnya first broke out in 1994.
