The Russian Football Union has handed out a total of almost $55,000 in fines to 11 of the 16 teams that competed in the last round of fixtures between Saturday and Tuesday, the governing body said Thursday.
New Anzhi Makhachkala coach Guus Hiddink and player-coach Roberto Carlos earned Anzhi a fine of $672 for stepping outside their technical area, while Spartak Moscow coach Valery Karpin and his Zenit St. Petersburg counterpart Luciano Spalletti each caused their clubs to be fined $1,008 for the same offence.
CSKA collected the highest penalty, a total of over $10,000 for “use of pyrotechnics by fans,” “the chanting of profanities by fans” and “improper conduct by the team” in their 2-2 draw with Zenit, the Russian Football Union said.
Zenit were hit with over $6,000 in fines because of their fans’ use of pyrotechnics and the team delaying the start of the match, as well as Spalletti’s wanderings.
Hiddink said Wednesday that Anzhi goalkeeper Vladimir Gabulov had been unjustly shown the yellow card for time-wasting after complaining about missiles thrown by Dynamo Moscow fans.
Dynamo were fined around $670 because fans threw projectiles, while Rubin Kazan received the same fine for the same offence.
Hiddink has said he will appeal Gabulov’s yellow card, but Wednesday’s meeting of the disciplinary committee did not consider the issue.
The most common offence was the use of pyrotechnics by fans, where seven incidents attracted total fines of $23,500.
Six cases of profane chanting attracted fines amounting to $16,100, while inappropriate behavior by teams earned total fines of $6,700 and three teams were hit with a total of $1,000 in fines for unspecified violations of the rules of the game.
