At least three people were killed and many injured when a train derailed near the city of Burlington in Canada’s Ontario Province, the Toronto Star said on Monday.

Several cars of Toronto-bound train with 75 passengers derailed at 00:30 Moscow time Monday (20:30 GMT Sunday). The derailed cars slightly damaged nearby buildings.

"Aerial pictures from the scene show a train zigzagged off the tracks, with at least four cars flipped onto their sides. One car has slid onto its side and into a nearby building after it left the tracks," the paper said.

The number of injured is yet unknown as some passengers are still trapped in the derailed cars, but at least one air ambulance headed to hospital with the injured and two helicopters landed nearby.

The cause of the accident is yet to be established.

“I have no clue,” Toronto Star quoted Via Rail company spokesperson Michelle Lamarche as saying. “Right now the focus is on the crew and passengers.”
