Opposition figurehead and anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny, chess champion-turned-politician Garry Kasparov and Sergei Udaltsov, a leader of the Left Front movement, joined the march.

Some 25,000 people were expected to take part in the demonstration, which received an official sanction from the authorities.

However, police said only 2,500 people participated in the protest, while media reports put the figure at 10,000 to 15,000.

The organizers initially planned to march along the central Nevsky Avenue, but the authorities moved the protest to another location in the city center.
