Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said he was planning to run for the post of the country’s leader once again at the 2015 presidential election.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said he was planning to run for the post of the country’s leader once again at the 2015 presidential election.

“I have the right to think about the second term and it is real. But I have to work hard for this and it is a good motivation for me and my team. That is what we will be trying to achieve,” Yanukovych told leading Ukrainian television channels on Friday night.

He ruled out a possibility of the presidential election by parliament in 2015 saying that the president will be elected by people’s direct vote.

“We will have direct election and the president will be elected by the people of Ukraine,” he said.

Yanukovych also said he will not be initiating any political reforms to prolong the presidential term, which stands at five years in Ukraine.

After years of political turmoil under former President Viktor Yushchenko, Ukraine has seen a period of relative political stability since Viktor Yanukovych came to power February of 2010, narrowly defeating former prime minister and opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko.
