Dozens of Greek parliamentarians threaten to vote on Sunday against the requested package of new austerity measures

Dozens of Greek parliamentarians threaten to vote on Sunday against the requested package of new austerity measures, local television channels reported.

The Greek cabinet approved on Saturday a pack of new austerity measures requested by the Eurozone and the International Monetary Fund to secure a 130-billion euro ($170bln) bailout to avoid default.

The agreement should be passed by Greece’s parliament on Sunday and later receive approval from European finance ministers.

The 300-seat Greek parliament has been already abandoned by LAOS right-wing populist political party, which had 16 votes. It left the parliament in a protest to the proposed package. Six ministers and deputy ministers have also joined them and resigned from their posts.

Mega TV channel reported that 20 members of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, which holds the majority in the parliament occupying 153 seats, said they would be voting against the agreement, which requires a total of 151 votes to be passed.

Greece has been receiving financial support from the EU and the IMF since May 2010 to reduce the country's large budget deficit. However, the austerity measures approved by the government have sparked numerous riots and strikes, and the Greek government has missed its targets.
