Russia sees no reason to tighten UN sanctions on Sudan, Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Thursday.

Russia sees no reason to tighten UN sanctions on Sudan, Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Thursday.

UN Security Council Resolution 1556 introduced an embargo on arms supplies to all non-governmental groups and individuals in North, South and West Darfur in Sudan, he said.

“At the moment there is no need for introducing additional sanctions against Sudan,” he said, adding that it was important to make the most effective use of the existing sanctions-related mechanisms.

About 300,000 people have been killed in Darfur and 1.8 million have fled their homes since non-Arab rebels took up arms against the Arab-dominated Khartoum regime in 2003, according to UN statistics.
