Lawmakers from the ruling United Russia party adopted on Tuesday a statement rejecting any change of power in Russia through a revolution.

The statement urges all political forces and citizens in the country to unite in an effort to preserve the Russian state.

The document was expected to be signed by all factions in the lower house, the State Duma, but members of the opposition ultimately refused.

The appeal by United Russia targets mass opposition rallies across Russia, which it claims are bent on overthrowing Russia’s ruling tandem through public protests, similar to Ukraine’s experience during the “Orange Revolution” in 2004.

Supporters of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who is the likely winner of the upcoming presidential election, insist that the opposition is plotting a revolution in Russia in the interest of Western powers.

The protesters say they simply want full transparency of elections, release of “political prisoners” and democratic reforms in the country.
