Police in Yakutia are looking for a serial dog killer after he shot dead a champion female husky, the Regions.ru website said on Wednesday.

The thoroughbred husky was killed on January 21 in the city of Yakutsk, when its owner Alexander Sheludeshev let it out for a walk. “I came back to take the animal after 10 minutes and instead of the dog I found a pool of blood,” Sheludeshev said.

He found the husky nearby, “The animal stumbled to the nearest house building site where it died in pain,” Sheludeshev went on.

The first reports of an animal abuser who shoots at dogs from a shotgun emerged in early 2011, however, police refused to launch an investigation as he killed mainly homeless canines.

“Experts estimated my dog was valued at 60,000 rubles, that’s why police accepted my complaint,” Sheludeshev said. The slain dog grabbed first prize at the republic's 2010 husky contest. “Everyone in the city knew my dog,” its owner added.

The killer’s shot fractured two of the husky’s ribs and liver. “The bullet passed through the animal,” Sheludeshev said.

The animal killer has become a sort of hero for several Yakutian internet users. “They praise and justify his actions, they say awful things. Several followers of the killer have already emerged, they are not so sophisticated,” the head of local animal welfare society Alla Komarenko said.
