Russia accounts for 26.6 percent of cases pending at the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR), a larger share than any other country, the international court’s president Nicolas Bratza said on Thursday.

Out of the backlog of 151,600 cases as of December 31, 2011, a total of 40,250, or 26.6 percent, were against Russia.

Turkey was second with almost 16,000 applications (10.5 percent), followed by Italy with 13,750 applications (9.1 percent).

San Marino, Monaco and Luxembourg had the fewest pending cases against them: four, eight and nine applications, respectively.

Russia's national judge Anatoly Kovler earlier said that the court receives on average about 15,000 applications from Russian nationals each year, of which about 17% are people seeking review of Russian court verdicts.

Russians also frequently complain about poor conditions and inadequate medical assistance in pre-trial detention facilities.
