Slovenian basketball star Sasha Vujacic has told RIA Novosti that he is "being a gentleman" and letting fiancée Maria Sharapova spill the details of their wedding.
The pair got engaged in October 2010 in Los Angeles, where Vujacic was playing point guard for the Lakers, but have yet to publicly name the day for the nuptials, or announce a location.
"Well, I did my part. I asked her to marry me, she said 'yes,' so we are engaged," Vujacic, 27, told RIA Novosti after his current team Efes Istanbul was thrashed 96-68 by Andrei Kirilenko's CSKA Moscow.
"When will the date and the place come out? I'll be a gentleman; I'll let her tell you that next week when she comes. If not, we'll see."
The smitten Vujacic, all smiles and shrugs, left the tantalizing morsels hanging without any elaboration, but was apparently referring to Sharapova's participation in the Fed Cup. Russia faces Spain in Moscow on February 4-5. Sharapova is currently in Melbourne, where she is through to the final of the Australian Open after beating Petra Kvitova in Thursday's seminfinal.
Vujacic won two championship rings in six seasons with the Lakers before being traded to the New Jersey Nets in December 2010. The lockout saw him move to Efes, Turkey's most successful team, but he admitted to craving more success back in the NBA.
"My big wish is to win another championship ring," Vujacic said. "Yes, I want to go back to the NBA but you never know what the future holds, so we will see."
The 6 ft 7 in guard said he found it difficult to spend so much time apart from his fiancée, whom he sees more often via a screen than in the flesh.
"Well it's hard, but thanks to hi-tech technology these days we can see each other on different video chat, which helps a lot," he said.
"We knew what was ahead of us when I decided to go to Turkey and she's got tournaments every couple of weeks. ... We've got to do the maximum we can for our careers.
"We're gonna have plenty of time to spend with one another when we're a little bit older."
He claims not to be overawed by the fame and achievements of his three-time grand slam-winning wife-to-be - "I have my own little career too," - saying he takes great comfort from her success.
"Really, I couldn't be prouder. ... She's dominating again and it's beautiful to watch."
