At least seven people have been killed as four coordinated attacks rocked Nigeria’s northern city of Kano, Western media reported.

One explosion ripped through the city’s police headquarters soon after 5 pm on Friday, resulting in an unknown number of victims, the Guardian said. The attack was reportedly carried out by a bomber who arrived at the site on a motorbike.

Two other blasts his police stations and an immigration office in Kano, Nigeria's second-biggest city, followed by a sound of gunshots.

Radical Islamist sect Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for the attacks. The group has been seeking to impose Sharia law across Nigeria with its predominantly Christian south and largely Muslim north.

The group has been responsible for at least 510 killings last year alone, according to the Associated Press.

This year, at least 76 people have been killed in attacks by the sect, including a deadly Christmas Day attack on a Catholic church near the country’s capital Abuja, in which 37 people were killed.

Following the attack, a state of emergency has been declared in four Nigerian states.
