Russia is facing a serious shortage of new recruits during the spring military draft, the Nezavisimaya Gazeta said on Wednesday citing a report by the State Duma Defense Committee.

According to official data, the current strength of the Russian Armed Forces is estimated at 774,500 personnel, including 220,000 officers and about 200,000 contracted soldiers.

The military needs to recruit about 300,000 men during each draft to keep the number of personnel at the required level of 1 million.

However, the crisis in the conscript service caused by demographic decline and army dodging has led the Defense Ministry to halve the number of conscripts in the autumn 2011 draft period.

Only 135,000 recruits were drafted in fall last year.

The Russian military is facing a tough choice, either to cut the number of personnel in the Armed Forces or to find a way to draft the required number of new recruits, although the latter could lead to the violation of the current legislation and human rights, the paper said.
