At least 68 people are reported to have been killed in Thursday’s suicide attacks targeting several Iraqi cities, the BBC reported.

According to the BBC at least 24 people were killed and almost 70 were injured in the explosions that had rocked Shia areas of Baghdad, the Sadr City and the Kadhimiya.

Another 44 people, Shia pilgrims, were killed in the city of Nasiriya, the BBC quoted local officials as saying.

The blasts were the deadliest since series of attacks struck Baghdad on December 22, killing 60 people.

Sectarian tensions in Iraq have worsened after the U.S. troops withdrew from Iraq on December 18 and an arrest warrant was issued for the Sunni Vice-President Tariq al-Hashemi, accusing him of giving the orders to security services to kill other government officials.

Al-Hashimi, who is currently shelters in Iraqi Kurdistan, denied the allegations, saying that the Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite, used the security forces to go after political opponents, especially Sunnis.

Many Sunnis have complained of being sidelined in the political process since Saddam Hussein was ousted and Shiites dominated the government.
