Several explosions have rocked Shiite neighborhoods of Baghdad on Thursday, killing at least 21 and leaving dozens more wounded, world media said.

In the Shiite district of Sadr City, a bomb planted on a parked motorcycle exploded at around 7:00 am (0400 GMT) near a group of day laborers waiting to pick up work, killing seven and wounding 20 others, the AFP said referring to an interior ministry official.

Two hours later, twin car bombs exploded in the north Baghdad neighborhood of Kadhimiyah.

The blasts were the worst since a series of explosions across Baghdad on December 22 killed 60 people.

Iraq is still plagued by a deadly Sunni Muslim insurgency and Shiite militias nearly nine years after the US-led invasion.

A political crisis that erupted shortly after US troops withdrew from Iraq on December 18 has revived concerns about sectarian strife in Iraq.

Many Sunnis have complained of being sidelined in the political process since Saddam Hussein was ousted and Shiites dominated the government.
