Cairo Criminal Court has exonerated five policemen accused in the deadly shooting of protesters during the nationwide uprising last winter.

Cairo Criminal Court has exonerated five policemen accused in the deadly shooting of protesters during the nationwide uprising last winter.

The policemen were charged with killing five people and attempting to kill six others.

Lawyers for the accused provided videos taken during the protests. “The policemen’s actions were ruled self-defense,” a lawyer said.

A wave of violent mass protests demanding end of the rule of President Hosni Mubarak swept across Egypt last spring and gave a push to pro-democracy demonstrations and rallies in other countries of the Arab world.

Mubarak was ousted on February 11. Protests and unrest have continued throughout the year, with pro-democracy activists keeping up pressure for reforms from the military, which took over from Mubarak. Clashes between protesters and security forces have killed more than 100 people since Mubarak’s ouster.
