Russia’s NATO envoy, Dmitry Rogozin, announced on Tuesday that his Facebook account had been hacked.
“My Facebook account has been hacked. How timely…that was bound to happen,” Rogozin, an outspoken nationalist ex-lawmaker, wrote on his Twitter account.
There is still no information about whether Rogozin restored his Facebook account and the politician also does not know what the motives could be behind the hacking.
Political experts believed that Rogozin would make a return to domestic politics ahead of December's parliamentary polls, but instead he declined to register his nationalist Rodina (Motherland) party and threw his weight behind Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s United Russia ruling party.
The attack on Rogozin’s Facebook account comes a day after the Livejournal account of Russia’s bestselling writer Boris Akunin was hacked.
The Georgian-born writer, whose real name is Grigory Chkhartishvili, emerged as a key figure in protests over the country’s disputed parliamentary vote and was prominent at the biggest ever rally against the rule of Putin earlier this month.
Russia’s social blogging platforms and liberal websites have suffered repeated cyber attacks since the December 4 election as they are being used to organize protests against alleged electoral fraud in favor of Putin’s United Russia party.
