Russian security services succeeded in their anti-terrorism effort, first of all in the volatile North Caucasus, in 2011, an adviser to the head of the National Antiterrorism Committee (NAC) said.

“The NAC and its structures achieved positive results this year and outlined a tendency to crush terrorism in Russia in the near future,” Andrei Przhezdomsky said prior to the 94th anniversary of the Security Agency Worker’s Day, celebrated on December 20.

Speaking about the NAC’s activity in 2011 and plans for 2012, Przhezdomsky said the committee is “one of the key links in the anti-terrorism chain” and called on security services to eradicate terrorism manifestations next year.

Russia currently has a few security services, including the Federal Security Service, the Foreign Intelligence Service and the Federal Guard Service. In the Soviet times, these agencies made part of the KGB.
