The ruling United Russia nominated on Saturday Sergei Naryshkin, the former head of presidential administration, as the possible State Duma’s speaker, party’s press service said.

Naryshkin’s candidacy was announced during the party’s General Council meeting along with the other names to occupy the top positions in Russia’s Lower House of Parliament.

Naryshkin, who is not the member of the United Russia party, said after the meeting that his appointment had already been discussed after the parliamentary polls on December 4 and during the vote count.

“I have always supported the United Russia,” Naryshkin said.

Boris Gryzlov, the former Duma speaker, quitted his post on Wednesday after eight years of work.

Among the other candidates are the head of the Russian Olympic Committee, Alexander Zhukov who was proposed as the Duma’s first deputy head and a senior party member Andrei Vorobyov who may be appointed as the head of the United Russia faction in the State Duma.

The new Duma will discuss candidacies at its first session on December 21.
