The United States has lifted most of its sanctions against Libya, imposed earlier in order to pressure the Muammar Gaddafi regime.

The United States has lifted most of its sanctions against Libya, imposed earlier in order to pressure the Muammar Gaddafi regime.

“Today, after careful consultation with the new Libyan government, the United States rolled back most U.S. sanctions on the government of Libya… Due to the bravery and perseverance of the Libyan people, the Gaddafi regime was defeated and Libya is now undertaking a transition to democracy,” the White House said in a statement on Friday.

“Today’s action unfreezes all government and Central Bank funds within U.S. jurisdiction, with limited exceptions,” it said, adding that the Gaddafi family and regime’s assets will remain frozen.

Gaddafi, who had ruled Libya for almost 42 years, was captured and executed by rebels near his home town of Sirte in late October.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin condemned the NATO-led military operation in Libya, and the footage of Gaddafi’s killing shown by world media.
