The new Egyptian cabinet led by Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri was sworn in before the head of the country’s ruling military council on Wednesday, the local MENA news agency reported.

The national salvation government was formed after the previous cabinet resigned in late November amid large-scale protests against the military rule of Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi.

Al-Ganzouri was appointed the interim prime minister on November 25. It took him two weeks to form the new cabinet, which will face the challenge of restoring security and repairing the country’s crippling economy.

Al-Ganzouri’s cabinet includes 12 ministers from the previous government. Mohamed Ibrahim Youssef, the former Giza governorate security director, has occupied the key post of interior minister.

Earlier on Wednesday, the ruling military council granted presidential powers to al-Ganzouri, while maintainng its jurisdiction over military and judicial issues.
