At least 11 tourists from Hungary were killed and 27 injured when a tourist bus crashed near the resort city of Hurghada on the Red Sea, the Egyptian TV said.

Four of the injured are in critical condition and are currently being transported to Cairo.

According to a statement by the road police, the tourist bus driver lost control of his vehicle in an attempt to avoid collision with a truck, which cut him up. The bus swerved and overturned.

The truck driver fled the accident scene.

Egypt is notorious for its traffic accident statistics. About 8,000 people die on the country's roads annually. The number of traffic accidents involving tourist buses has been declining, however, due to a state education program and strict control over drivers working in the tourist industry.

Tourism is a major source of income for the Egyptian budget. The country is visited by about 13 million tourists annually.
