A goat named Zottel, the mascot of the right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP), has been found in Zurich safe and sound, the party said in a statement.

Zottel and another goat, Mimo, were stolen from the farm of SVP lawmaker Ernst Schibli in the canton of Zurich early on Saturday.

A radical left group, Antifaschistische Aktion, claimed responsibility for the kidnapping, saying in an online statement that members of the group had "paid a visit to Zottel and took him with us.” In their statement they accused the goat “of spreading racist paranoia" and "general hostility to the proletariat."

The animals were found on Tuesday in the Zurich-Witikon area. They were tied to a tree and painted black, said Schibli.

The kidnapping story captivated local media and social networks: some supported the goat and urged punishment for its captors, while others defended the kidnapping.
