Mashinostroitelny Zavod, part of Russian nuclear fuel producer TVEL, may start production of fuel from Australian uranium, its Vice President Vasily Konstantinov said on Friday.

"To use the Australian uranium, it is necessary to control over all its production points and the points will be picked out in accordance with the choice made by the parties. One of the points may be here at Mashzavod," Konstantinov said.

Australian officials have inspected Mashzavod's production of fuel pellets, the process of equipping fuel elements with fuel pellets and fuel assembly.

"I would like to note two things which impressed me most - the degree of automation and a continuous improvement of production," Robert Floyd, chief executive with the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office, or ASNO, said.

Russian state-owned nuclear energy company Rosatom and ASNO signed a memorandum of understanding in June, under which the parties are to agree a list of Russian plants which can refine, use and store Australian uranium, and enrich it.
