Police arrested more than 700 anti-Wall Street demonstrators who tried to block traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge and attempted an unauthorized march across the roadway on Saturday afternoon, local media and police reported on Sunday.
The protesters detained by the police were part of a larger group crossing the bridge from Manhattan where they have been protesting near Wall Street against corporate greed.
Bridge traffic heading to Brooklyn from Manhattan was shut down for several hours and finally reopened at 8:05 p.m., police said.
The protesters said they were defending 99 percent of the U.S. population against the wealthiest 1 percent. They said they were also protesting against police brutality and union busting.
