Former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko should be released from jail, former EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said on Friday.

Former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko should be released from jail, former EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said on Friday.

The release should be immediate, Solana told journalists in the Crimean city of Yalta where he was attending a European strategy forum. Politicians should not be treated like criminals or punished for political decisions, he said.

Tymoshenko, 50, was arrested on August 5 on charges she forced Ukraine's state gas firm Naftogaz to sign unfavorable gas supply deals with Russia while she was prime minister. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Tymoshenko has repeatedly denied all the charges against her, saying they are politically motivated.
