A convoy carrying Saadi Gaddafi, the third son of the fugitive Libyan leader, was intercepted in Niger late on Sunday, Al Arabiya said.

"Today, September 11, a patrol of the Nigerien armed forces intercepted a convoy in which was found one of Gaddafi's sons," the channel quoted Niger's justice minister Marou Amadou as saying.

Many top officials of the Gaddafi regime have fled to neighboring countries as Libyan opposition forces gained control over most of the Libyan territory, including its capital Tripoli.

On Sunday fighting intensified near Bani Walid, one of the last bastions of Gaddafi loyalists. The other towns are Jufrah, Sabha and Sirte.

Niger earlier said that three top military officials of the Gaddafi regime, including Air Force ex-chief al-Rifi Ali Al-Sharif, were on its territory.

A dozen of ousted leader's aides, including the former internal security chief, Mansour Daw, also crossed into Niger and are currently being held under house arrest in a villa in the capital, Niamey, Al Arabiya said.

In a separate development, rebel forces in Tripoli captured Bou zaid Dorda, the head of Gaddafi's external security organization, Iran's Press TV reported.

The whereabouts of Muammar Gaddafi himself remain unknown, but Niger has denied that Qaddafi was on its territory.
