Americans commemorate on Sunday the 10 anniversary of the September 11 tragedy and remember 3,000 people died in the hijacked plane attacks.

The nation remembers the victims by a minute of silence, which started at 8.46 New York time, exactly the time when a plane of American Airlines hijacked by terrorists from the Islamic militant group al Qaeda crashed in the North Tower of the World Trade Center a decade ago.

The mourning ceremony will be interrupted three times by a minute of silence at 9.03 New York time, when the second plane smashed into the South Tower, at 9.59, when the first burning tower crashed down, and at 10.29, when the second skyscraper tumbled.

Law enforcement authorities in New York and Washington are on high alert against what was called by the authorities a "credible but unconfirmed" terrorist threat to the United States a decade after the collapse of the World Trade Center's twin towers.

In the September 11 attacks, al Qaeda's 19 men hijacked airliners and crashed them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon outside Washington and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Just weeks after that, U.S. forces invaded Afghanistan to topple that country's Taliban rulers who had harbored the al Qaeda leaders responsible for the September 11 attacks.
