The organizers of New York's Fashion Week have canceled a show by the designer daughter of Uzbekistan's autocratic leader Islam Karimov, who is accused of presiding over widespread human rights abuses, The Atlantic magazine reported.

The Harvard-educated Gulnara Karimova was set to show her new spring clothing line, Guli, at Fashion Week on September 15.

A spokesman for the sports media company IMG Worldwide, which organizes the semi-annual event, said the show had been canceled in response to increasing concern among human rights groups.

"As a result of various concerns raised we have canceled the Guli show," the IMG spokesman said in a statement.

Karimova's 73-year-old father has been in power in the gas-rich Central Asian republic since 1989.

Rights groups accuse the former Communist boss of serious human rights violations and silencing political dissent.

The European Union imposed an arms embargo and a travel ban against his administration after the mass killing of hundreds of unarmed protesters in the city of Andijan in May 2005.

Karimov insisted the security forces had targeted Islamist militants.

The sanctions were lifted two years ago.

Karimova, 39, is also Uzbekistan's ambassador to Spain and to the UN.
