China, Russia hold training maneuvers on Amur River

On Sept. 8, Russian and Chinese rescuers practiced rescuing people in distress, as well as cleaning up oil spills and put out fires on vessels. 09.09.2011, Sputnik International
The Amur River region rescue teams, Directorial Board of the Civil Defense, Emergencies and Disaster Relief Ministry for the Amur Region, and the Administrative Board for Safety at Sea in the Heilongjiang Province took part in the maneuvers.
The scenario of the maneuvers included the collision of two ships -- a Russian oil tanker and a Chinese passenger ship. After the collision, the passenger ship discovered a leak and the people on board had to be evacuated. A fire also started on the tanker and oil spilled into the water.
The Russian Civil Defense, Emergencies and Disaster Relief Ministry’s Be-200 amphibian plane landed on the water, delivered rescuers to the ship, scooped up water and started to put out the fire.
According to Director of the Directorial Board of the Civil Defense, Emergencies and Disaster Relief Ministry for the Amur Region Viktor Bukhta, there have been no ship collisions or fires on board ships in or around the Amur region for about 15 years. But such accidents could happen given the pipeline running under the Amur River to the Chinese border.
The first Russia-China joint maneuvers took place in 2009. This time around, the maneuvers were grander and included more powerful and modern equipment. The rescuers also faced more difficult tasks.
