At least five Yemeni soldiers were killed when a suicide car bomb went off near a military headquarters in the southern port city of Aden, the al-Masdar news portal reported, quoting a police source.

The explosion, followed by gunfire, occurred late on Saturday. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, the third suicide bombing in the city since early May, but police officials were quoted as saying that Al Qaeda's Yemeni branch was likely to be behind the bombing.

Another southern Yemeni city, Zanjibar, has been under siege by Al Qaeda-affiliated militants since late May. Attempts by the Yemeni army and security forces to regain control of the city with the help of tanks and military aircraft have yielded no results.

Yemen has been hit by public protests against the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who is currently being treated in Saudi Arabia after an attack on his compound in early June.
