Irene that was downgraded from the hurricane to a tropical storm, has killed at least 12 people on the East Coast.

The states of Virginia, Maryland, District of Colombia and the New York City area have been badly affected by the storm, which made landfall on Saturday morning in North Carolina.

New York was brought to a standstill as the public transport stopped working and the five main airports of the NYC area were shut down during the first ever mandatory evacuation in the city's history.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the storm is moving through Connecticut at the speed of 25 miles per hour. It is likely to reach eastern coast of Canada on Monday.

The U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the worst is over. However she urged the U.S. citizens to stay inside and not drive through highways.
