A Federal Security Service officer has been shot dead in Russia's volatile North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia, a spokesman for the Russian Investigation Committee in Ingushetia said.

Magomed Korigov was attacked by a group of unknown gunmen in his house in northern Ingushetia late on Saturday, soon after 11 pm local time (7 pm GMT).

A criminal case has been initiated over the killing. The attackers, if detained and brought to trial, may face life in prison.

Attacks on police and security officials are a frequent occurrence in the North Caucasus, which saw two brutal federal wars against separatists in Chechnya in the mid-1990s and the early 2000s.

The Russian authorities have moved to improve the economic and social situation in the North Caucasus by attracting investments in the region and creating new jobs as part of their attempts to prevent local residents from joining militant gangs.
