The United Nations urged reconciliation in the world’s newest state of South Sudan after hundreds of people died in tribal clashes.

The UN secretary general’s special representative, Hilde Johnson, called for restraint on Monday after fighting between the Murle and Lou Nuer communities in Jonglei State left at least 600 and over 700 injured.

The clashes – thought to be over cattle rustling - took place on Thursday. A UN verification team was deployed to the area.

"Peaceful dialogue is the primary means for reconciliation, and the tribal leaders need to sit down and work out their differences." Aleem Siddique, spokesman for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, said.
