Polish police on Friday confirmed the death of one person and 56 have been hospitalized after a train derailed in central Poland.

Earlier it was reported that four people had died and 30 were injured in the accident.

"We confirm the death of one person, but an overturned carriage has not yet been righted and there may be more victims," a policeman, Adam Kolasa, said.

At 4:15 p.m. local time [14:15 GMT], four carriages and the engine of an intercity train from Warsaw to Katowice went off the tracks in the village of Baby, near the city of Piotrkow Trybunalski in central Poland. The cause of the derailment is yet unknown.

About 280 passengers were on board the train. The first wagon overturned and suffered maximum damage.

Helicopters, firefighters, ambulances and rescue services are involved in the rescue effort.
