There are alternatives if you’re visiting Moscow and want to get out of the capital to see the “real Russia.” Uglich on the Volga River is one of the major cities (pop. 32,000) included in the Golden Ring, approximately 120 miles out of the capital. The town was founded in 937 and was a princedom until 1328, when the local princes sold the area to a Moscow prince. Today, the city is adorned with dozens of churches and cathedrals, and there are museums for everyone’s tastes and interests.
