Violence began in the British capital's northern district of Tottenham on Saturday over the fatal shooting of a young man by police. On Sunday and Monday, it spread to other areas in London and Birmingham. Thousands of extra police officers flooded the streets of London on Wednesday to deter rioters, after Prime Minister David Cameron warned the government would take any necessary action to restore order and confidence to Britain's streets.

An-12 transport aircraft flying from the city of Magadan to the Chukotka Autonomous Area in Russia's extreme northeast disappeared from radars some 300 km (186 miles) from its takeoff point shortly after reporting a fuel leak and engine fire on Tuesday. Later it crashed.
