On July 22, 1941, exactly one month after the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, the German Luftwaffe conducted its first large-scale air raid against Moscow.

The five-hour attack involved over 200 warplanes. The Germans dropped 100 metric tons of explosive bombs and 45,000 incendiary bombs. Soviet fighters shot down 12 enemy bombers, with anti-aircraft gun crews downing another ten.
