Twenty-one people were killed and over 100 others injured in three explosions that rocked India's commercial capital Mumbai on Wednesday, regional media said.

Earlier reports put the death toll at 13 and the number of those injured at over 80.

Wednesday's blasts, which occured in busy commercial and residential areas during the evening peak hours, were the first major terrorist attacks in the city since the 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed more than 160 people.

The first two explosions took place in Mumbai's Dawar and Zaiveri markets. The blasts damaged nearby buildings, including the local opera house.

The third blast occured near the Opera House on Mumbai's southern Charni Road. Mumbai, as well as the capital of Delhi and several other cities, were put on high alert following the blasts.

The cause of the explosions has not yet been confirmed, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Mumbai was struck by terrorists in a huge attack on November 26, 2008, when ten terrorists infiltrated the city by sea from Pakistan and attacked local hotels, railway stations and restaurants, killing a total of 166 people.
