At least two people died after a cruise ship carrying over 170 people sank on the Volga River, the regional emergences center said on Sunday.

At least two people died after a cruise ship carrying over 170 people sank on the Volga River, the regional emergences center said on Sunday.

"Overall, there were 140 passengers and 33 crewmembers aboard the double-deck cruise ship. As many as 55 people have been rescued by a passing ship," the emergencies center said.

The cruise ship Bulgaria sank at 13:58 Moscow time (09:58 GMT) on Sunday near the village of Syukeyevo in the Kansko-Ustinovsky district of the Republic of Tatarstan. Earlier reports said there were 22 people aboard the ship.

A helicopter and two rescue boats are currently working on the scene of the incident.
