SCO will not turn into “NATO of the East”

The role of China in the SCO has been subject of debate, with some asserting that the country seeks to dominate the organization. RIA Novosti’s Mikhail Yousef spoke with Aleksandr Sharavin, director of the Institute for Political and Military Analysis, who discussed China’s role in the SCO and evaluated the organization’s strengths and weaknesses in the 10 years of its existence.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization held its 10th anniversary summit in Astana on June 14-15. Over the past decade, the organization has succeeded in building a number of institutional frameworks and mechanisms, addressing key problems such as terrorism and drug trafficking, as well forging closer economic and security links between its members.
