The founder of Moscow's famed Taganka Theatre, Yuri Lyabimov, said he may quit the theatre he has led for nearly half a century due to a row with actors over pay.

The founder of Moscow's famed Taganka Theatre, Yuri Lyabimov, said he may quit the theatre he has led for nearly half a century due to a row with actors over pay.

The dispute erupted last week while the theatre was on tour in the Czech Republic. Before a performance of Brecht's classic play "The Good Person of Szechwan" the actors refused to rehearse until they were paid. They insist that previously the theatre has not always paid them.

Lyubimov said he does "not intend to work with these actors anymore."

"I have had enough of this," he said.

Lyubimov's wife Katalin said her husband often paid the actors out of his own pocket.

Lyubimov, 93, said he is currently considering whether to quit the Taganka Theatre he founded in 1964.

Lyubimov is one of the leading names in the Russian and Soviet theatre world and worked with the late actor and singer Vladimir Vysotsky.
