Russia has thwarted several attempts by importers to supply EU vegetables under fake documents, despite an embargo imposed by the Russian government following the spread of a highly virulent E.Coli infection in Europe, Russia's food safety watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor said on Monday.

Russia has thwarted several attempts by importers to supply EU vegetables under fake documents, despite an embargo imposed by the Russian government following the spread of a highly virulent E.Coli infection in Europe, Russia's food safety watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor said on Monday.

"Last week, Rosselkhoznadzor's divisions in Moscow, and the Moscow and Tula Regions prevented four attempts to import plant products into Russia, which according to accompanying documents were made in Israel, Morocco, Serbia and Albania, and had the traces of changes in their labels. The expert study of packages has revealed old labels testifying to Dutch origin of the products," Rosselkhoznadzor said in a statement.

Russia introduced an embargo on vegetable imports from Europe on June 2 after an E. Coli bacteria outbreak caused a pandemic in Europe. The bacteria, presumably found in vegetables, have already killed at least 40 people in Europe.

The infection was reported to be traced to bean sprouts grown on a farm in Germany's Lower Saxony region, some 70 km (40 miles) south of Hamburg.

Russia's authorities have said they will lift the ban after the source of infection is identified and the EU takes measures to prevent the supply of infected vegetables to Russia.
