At least five people were injured after a Tu-134 passenger aircraft crashed near the city of Petrozavodsk, in Russia's north, a spokeswoman for the Russian Emergencies Ministry said on Tuesday.

"The plane took off from the Domodedovo airport [in Moscow] at 22.30 Moscow time [18.30 GMT] and was supposed to land at 0.04 [20.04 GMT Monday] in Petrozavodsk. According to preliminary information, there were 43 passengers and five crew members on board of the aircraft," Irina Adrianova said.

She said the plane crash landed in a field some 15 km (9 miles) away from the airport.

A fire erupted after the plane landed but it has been already put out by firefighters, she said.

Five people have been hospitalized, but the fate of the other is still unknown, Adrianova added.
