International Atomic Energy Agency head Yukiya Amano suggested on Monday conducting safety checks on every tenth nuclear power plant in the world in the next three years.

"I suggest that countries with nuclear power agree to systematic IAEA checks," Amano said.

"Since it is unrealistic to conduct checks on all 440 reactors in the world, I suggest doing it on a selective basis," Amano added.

Yukiya Amano recommended a review of IAEA standards in the next 12 months in response to a recent nuclear disaster in Japan.

"We need to systematically and regularly review the safety of all nuclear power plants," Amano said.

Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was seriously damaged by a powerful earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11. Fukushima's operator has since been struggling to stop radioactive leaks from the plant's crippled reactors. Radioactive elements have been found in the water, air and food products in some parts of Japan.
