Moscow police pledged on Sunday to cut short any attempts of unsanctioned rallies or provocations in the Russian capital on Sunday as Russia was celebrating Independence Day.

"The Moscow police officially warns that it will immediately cut short any illegal provocative actions in strict compliance with the existing legislation. All offenders will be detained and brought to account," the police said in a statement.

Russian citizens are celebrating Russia Day on June 12. The holiday has been celebrated since 1992. It was introduced to mark the official declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Republic on June 12, 1990.

About 4,000 policemen and interior ministry servicemen will be on duty in order to provide public order and security during Russia Day, the Moscow police said.
