The Russian Supreme Court on Wednesday eliminated The Transfiguration of Russia, a nationwide charitable public organization, which is a rehabilitation center for drug addicts, alcoholics and socially disadvantaged citizens.

The Ministry of Justice conducted investigations, which revealed evidence of illegal business activities, the lack of proper declarations of funding charitable programs, and also that the symbol which the organization used on their letterhead was not registered.

The issue of the sometimes radical methods employed by non-state organizations came to light last fall when Yegor Bychkov, the director of an anti-narcotics clinic in the Urals, was sentenced to three years in prison for using "forceful methods" when treating his patients, including restraining them to their beds. His sentence was later reduced to a suspended one.

Most drug addicts slip back into dependency after undergoing treatment in Russian clinics, according to statistics. Around 30,000 Russians die from drug abuse every year.
