Badri Bitsadze, the former chief of Georgia's border police and the husband of Georgia's key opposition politician Nino Burdzhanadze has been sentenced in absentia to a two month preliminary jail term on charges of organizing attacks on police during the protests in Tbilisi last week.

Bitsadze is accused of orchestrating attacks on police during the five-day opposition protest against President Mikheil Saakashvili, which was broken up in the early hours of May 26. He is currently free and his location is unknown.

If he is arrested and found guilty at his trial, Bitsadze may face from four to seven years behind bars.

On Monday, Burdzhanadze said she would not formally post bail for her husband, since she did not want him to receive special treatment from the state. "So many detainees have no opportunity to post bail. Is my husband a special exception?" Burdzhanadze said.

Earlier on Wednesday Tbilisi City Court set bail for Bitsadze at $60,000.

Last week, Georgian police revealed a recording of a telephone conversation between Burdzhanadze and her younger son, Anzor Bitsadze, discussing a possible "Egyptian scenario" to overthrow Saakashvili.
