Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mamedyarov will pay a six-day working visit to the United States beginning Sunday, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has said.

During his stay in Washington, Mamedyarov will meet with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Fiona Hill, the director of the Center on the United States and Europe at Washington's Brookings Institution, the ministry said in a statement.

The Azerbaijani minister will also travel to New York where he will meet with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and deliver a speech at a meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) envoys at the UN headquarters.

He is also expected to hold talks with permanent representatives of the Arab League and Asian states to the UN.

On Friday, which marked the 20th anniversary of Azerbaijan's independence, the Azerbaijani Embassy in the United States published Clinton's message in which she said that the two countries maintained "strong relations based on mutual interest and respect" and that the United States remained "loyal to strengthening partnership between our states."

"We support regional security and stability, boosting energy security and encourage global economic and political reforms," the statement reads.
