Belarusian anarchist Igor Olinevich was sentenced on Friday to eight years in prison for throwing a fire bomb into the Russian Embassy compound in Minsk last August.

Belarusian anarchist Igor Olinevich was sentenced on Friday to eight years in prison for throwing a fire bomb into the Russian Embassy compound in Minsk last August.

His accomplice, Maxim Vetkin, was sentenced to four years.

Olinevich, Vetkin and two other anarchists were charged with carrying out a series of assaults and arson attacks in Belarus, including against the Russian Embassy.

No one was hurt in the attack on the embassy, but one of the two fire bombs that were thrown onto the premises hit a car and set it on fire, causing $10,000 in damage.

The incident sparked anger in Russia, with Moscow accusing "certain forces" of trying to "bring distrust and tensions to Russia-Belarus bilateral relations.

President Alexander Lukashenko suggested Russia could have been behind the attack and that "thugs and scoundrels" from Moscow may be to blame.
